GRADE II LISTED CIVIC CENTRE
A three year major refurbishment of Southampton Civic Centre
Southampton Civic Centre is an historical building that has sat at the heart of the city for over 80 years.
Over time, it had become unfit for modern purpose, with under-performing M&E services, a deteriorating building fabric, and an outdated office layout, all creating cost inefficiencies and barriers to productive operations.
Following a three-year refurbishment project, the Grade II* Listed Civic Centre once again proudly stands as a majestic municipal building for Southampton and its people, enabling the Council and its staff to deliver services efficiently and effectively.
The upgrade has enabled the Council to rationalise its estate from seven buildings to three, and provide an impressive office space that is flexible, future proofed and cost efficient to operate.
The project was not without its challenges.
Working within the boundaries of a Grade II* Listed building that remained operational, whilst undergoing replacement of all services, an upgrade of building fabric, and safe removal of a substantial amount of asbestos, and all within an economic crisis, created a number of obstacles.
Thanks to the commitment and close collaboration of the project team, comprising Southampton City Council, Capita Symonds and our construction team, these challenges were overcome without negatively impacting budget or build programme.
This project was procured through the iESE Framework, now the Southern Construction Framework (SCF).
