The first appointment has seen Wates commence planned maintenance works at Warewell Close in Walsall, including designing and installing external wall insulation, replacing windows and doors and undertaking structural repairs to two, five storey blocks in a conservation area in the town centre.
Wates will also work with whg to deliver these services across a series of low-rise blocks in Walsall, as part of a second planned maintenance programme to improve 187 homes.
Both contracts will allow Wates to create further training and employment opportunities across the West Midlands. The social housing maintenance provider has already shown its commitment to supporting people into work by hosting with whg two employability workshops, offering insight into the construction industry as well as advice on CV writing and interview techniques. This initiative has resulted in two work experience students joining the project team in Walsall.
Elsewhere in the West Midlands, Wates is delivering one of the largest social housing maintenance contracts in Europe for Birmingham City Council. Valued at £45m, the contract has already generated a local supply chain spend of £7.8m.
Wates is also responsible for delivering housing improvement works across over 4,200 properties for Tamworth Borough Council.
David Morgan, Managing Director of Wates Living Space, said:
