We recently hosted the South & London SBTi (Science-Based Targets Initiative) Supply Chain Workshop, bringing together subcontractors, partners, and industry leaders to discuss the role of sustainability in construction and the steps needed to meet net-zero goals.

Mark Craig, Managing Director for Construction South, and Steve Holbrook, Managing Director for London, opened the session, emphasising the construction industry’s responsibility to lead on sustainability.

“Twenty years ago, [sustainability] wasn’t a priority. Today, our clients are investing heavily and looking to us to lead the way,” said Mark Craig.

The workshop explored Wates’ environmental sustainability commitments, including resource efficiency, greenhouse gas reduction, and enhancing the natural environment. Michela Ravaglia, Sustainability Business Partner, provided an overview of the current pledges and the construction industry’s role in reducing emissions, which account for 40% of national emissions.

A key focus was Wates’ commitment that 89% of its suppliers by emissions will have science-based targets (SBTIs) by 2027. Maria Gkonou, Sustainability Manager for the South, explained the SBTi framework, the tools available to SMEs, and the benefits of adopting science-based targets, such as improved reputation and increased competitiveness.

Industry leaders Lee Marley and Keltbray shared their sustainability journeys, giving practical insights into setting and achieving SBTi’s. A follow-up poll showed increased confidence among attendees in meeting these targets after hearing first-hand experiences.

Sharing sustainable expertise

We have been a partner of the Supply Chain Sustainability School since 2013, providing resources such as e-learning modules, carbon calculators, and templates to help suppliers implement sustainability practices.

The session concluded with practical steps businesses can take, from small behavioural changes to embedding sustainability from the earliest project stages.

This workshop is part of Wates’ ongoing commitment to supporting its supply chain in reducing carbon emissions and driving industry-wide change.
