71 New Homes Near Completion on Shuttleworth Road
71 new homes are nearing completion at Sphere Walk, Shuttleworth Road, and to celebrate progress Tim Wates and David Allen were joined by Wandsworth Councillors Govindia and Caddy to see the building topping out.
Sphere Walk, Shuttleworth Road
Built in partnership with Wates the scheme provides 62 social rented homes and 9 shared ownership apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms. 8 homes will be fully wheelchair accessible, with the remainder built to fully adaptable standards.
These new homes are part of the council’s Housing for All programme, which will deliver 1,000 homes by 2025. All the homes built will be prioritised for those who live and work in the borough with 60% of them being affordable. The first families will start to move in early in the New Year, 2022.
The scheme at Shuttleworth Road will also provide environmental and landscaping improvements which will benefit the local area and estate. This is part of the council’s commitment to deliver wider benefits to existing communities through its development programme, which includes improving shared spaces to make them more attractive for local residents.
The project has also attracted over £1 million in community investment, including employment and skills initiatives for 37 local people and support for 364 students who have taken part in Wates’s education activities. In all, almost 6,000 hours have been invested in employment and skills on this project.
All homes will meet the latest design and size standards. They will be more energy efficient, with 100% low energy lighting, a highly efficient communal heating system and intelligent building controls. Electric vehicle charging points will be added to the car park.
Wildlife will be encouraged into the area with biodiverse roofs and bat and bird boxes and there is a sustainable drainage system.
This is one of the largest council developments in decades and delivers crucial housing, alongside wider benefits for local people.
Our commitment to build 1,000 new homes across the borough for local people to buy or rent is on track and we are delivering the affordable homes we have committed to. This is Wandsworth delivering on its promises to our residents and workers.
We also have an ongoing commitment to improve our estates and manage our buildings and public spaces to the highest standards.
We’re very pleased to see Wates Residential achieving the standards we’d want all developers to aspire to. We can also be proud of the training and job opportunities this has provided for Wandsworth residents.”
Councillor Kim Caddy
Wandsworth’s cabinet member for housing
Our work at Shuttleworth Road has continued at pace throughout a difficult year to provide essential housing for those that need it.
I am proud to see the building topping out, with it well on its way to being completed, ready for residents to move in.
An important part of our work at Shuttleworth has been supporting the local community.
Almost 6,000 hours have been invested in employment and skills, which included hosting a ‘Building Futures’ course with eight Wandsworth residents to complete their Construction Skills Certification Scheme test and other essential training to work on a construction site.”
