A major project completed for the Home Office.

In October 2022 we completed a major project for the Home Office, on Channel View Road in Dover. Work included converting an old, existing warehouse into a two-storey unit complete with furnishings, cladding replacement, and new perimeter fencing. The project also involved cliff stabilisation works.

To keep disruption to a minimum, we worked closely with local businesses and residents around the site, giving them regular updates, while ensuring the safest construction journeys through the busy port area.

As a result of our support to the local community and workforce, along with best environmental practices, we achieved the highest score of 45/45 in two consecutive audits by the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), which seeks to raise standards in the construction industry.

Protecting the environment

Consideration was given to protecting the natural environment and the chalk cliff faces that border the site. We worked closely with RSK, who specialise in maintaining cliff landscape from a safety and environmental aspect, and Community Wood Recycling who collect commercial timber waste from site, and either re-use or recycle, meaning 100% is diverted from landfill.

This project is a fine example of how our specialist teams can work in sensitive, challenging environments for our public sector customers.

This was a major project, which has resulted in the complete transformation of the unit and the site as a whole. Our site team and supply chain have gone to great effort to deliver work to a high standard, while also investing in local communities and supporting local businesses. Our environmental work underpins our strategy to achieve net zero carbon by 2025.

The team’s hard work has been rightly been recognised by both the customer and through the exceptional CCS scores we received.”

Careers in construction

The project team worked with students at Folkstone College to promote careers in construction, leading to two college work experience placements on the project. The site team also gave a presentation on health and safety to a local primary school warning about the dangers around construction sites.
