Wates appointed to £30bn government construction framework
Wates has been appointed to deliver a new major seven-year framework for public sector construction.
The Crown Commercial Services (CCS) Construction Works and Associated Services agreement – estimated to be worth in the region of £30bn – is the first framework which can be used by all public sector bodies to find companies to build and maintain schools, hospitals, universities, prisons, housing and offices.
The appointment follows a robust competition process where the companys ability to deliver, its public sector record and financial stability were assessed and rated at the highest standard.
Over its 122-year history, Wates has established itself as a trusted partner of the public sector. The company now builds more schools for the Department for Education than any other contractor; is working on prison building projects across the country; building thousands of homes in partnership with local authorities, such as the London Boroughs of Havering, Brent and Camden and is the lead contractor on the ten-year refurbishment of Parliaments Northern Estate.
The appointment to the CCS Framework with Wates currently named on three of the 11 main lots, with three still to be announced by the Crown Commercial Service means the Group will be able to bid for a variety of new build and refurbishment projects across the UK, including Government secure facilities. And due to the wide scope of work – including everything from construction and refurbishment of buildings to housebuilding and maintaining high-rise tower blocks – every division of the Wates Group is involved, exploiting the companys specialist expertise in construction, property services and residential development.
Wates Group director Steve Beechey, Managing Director of Government Affairs, said the success recognised Wates expertise and track record in working for the public sector:
Wates has long been a trusted partner of Government, and over the years we have been proud to work with numerous central government departments, agencies and local authorities, delivering work of national strategic importance.
We pride ourselves on our industry-leading safety record, our focus on our people and on the long-lasting relationships we have with our clients, based on true collaboration and a shared set of values.
This framework, with its emphasis on collaboration and integrated teams looking for a better way to deliver value, is a really important addition to our existing public sector frameworks with Crown Commercial Services for the Government Hubs programme and two FM Workplace services frameworks.
Wates is one of the Governments leading suppliers of construction services, with projects delivered in defence, education and justice, and for government departments including the DfE, MoJ, MoD and the Government Property Service as well as the Parliamentary estate.
Key projects either underway or recently completed include:
- Defence: new facilities at RAF Marham to house the new F35 Lightning II aircraft, which will be operated by the 617 Dambusters Squadron
- Justice: Major projects on the Prison Estate for the Ministry of Justice including a new house-block at HMP Stocken, Rutland and major refurbishment at HMP Albany in the Isle of Wight
- Government Property: new fit-out projects in Leeds and Edinburgh as part of the Government Hubs Programme to house HMRC and other Government staff.
