Statement: SAFETY IN HIGH RISE BUILDINGS

Coronavirus Covid-19 - Statement from Wates
Home News Statement: SAFETY IN HIGH RISE BUILDINGS

We were horrified by the Grenfell Tower disaster and the tragic loss of life. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families and our admiration goes to the community which has rallied round so fantastically to provide support.

Wates was not involved in the recent refurbishment of Grenfell House, but the announcement by the Metropolitan Police on the cause of the fire and its rapid spread, and the subsequent flammability tests on cladding materials being conducted by local authorities, have implications for all of us in construction. We look forward to any forthcoming review of the Building Regulations, which will provide greater clarity for the industry.

We can confirm that all buildings delivered by Wates will have been designed and constructed to meet fire safety standards and have Building Control approval.

However, in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire, and in the light of new guidance issued by the Department for Communities and Local Government, we have launched an internal review of all high rise projects with which we have been involved over the last 15 years and are working with relevant stakeholders to address their concerns.
