We helped the dio raise £55,000 for the Veterans
Foundation in D-Day cycling challenge
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day this summer, our group public sector director, Stephen Beechey, undertook a bike ride through the historic landscapes of Normandy, France, to raise funds for the Veterans Foundation while paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice
Organised by Mike Green, Chief Executive of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, and supported by other industry partners, the four-day cycle – despite challenging weather – was interwoven with moments of reflection. The riders visited the beaches of Normandy, Pegasus Bridge, and Merville Battery, sites that bore witness to extraordinary courage eight decades ago.
The group also paid their respects at British, American, and Canadian cemeteries, confronting the stark reality of war’s human cost. In a particularly moving conclusion, Mike Green laid a wreath at Ranville Cemetery. There, the group paused in silent contemplation, honouring the sacrifices made by all who served. In a remarkable display of dedication and remembrance, fundraising efforts have surpassed £50,000, just one week after the cyclists completed their journey through Normandy.
“This effort cannot be underestimated. I know it was a challenging ride, comprising many miles and through some changeable weather,” said Veterans’ Foundation CEO and founder, retired Major General, David Shaw.
“Time is such a valuable commodity, so to have so many busy people generously undertake this gruelling task, in their own time in the summer, and raise an amazing amount of money on our behalf, is humbling.
“I know I speak for the whole armed forces community when I thank the cyclists for their undertaking and for raising £55,000 for us to donate to the charities that provide such vital support.”
We carry with us the weight of history, and the responsibility to honour those who came before us. While the cycling challenge was tough physically and mentally, being able to pay my respects to soldiers both past and present, while raising money for the Veterans Foundation was a fantastic opportunity that I’m proud to have been a part of.”
