Today we held a steel signing ceremony with Hartlepool Borough Council to mark the completion of steelwork on Hartlepool’s new flagship wellbeing hub development.

The new wellbeing hub, called Highlight, is due for completion next year and will include three pools and spectator seating, a 100-station gym, fitness studios, soft play areas, a café and refreshment area, and an NHS consultation suite.

The £30m scheme represents the council’s significant commitment to regeneration and revitalisation within the borough. The steel signing ceremony saw representatives of Hartlepool Borough Council, Tees Valley Combined Authority, Sport England, principal contractor Wates and other key stakeholders  come together at the site to sign the final piece of steel before it was lifted into position. The frame, which has taken 14 weeks to construct, is made up of 1,813 individual steel members weighing 420 tonnes.

Throughout this project,  we will provide the equivalent of 520 apprentice weeks and Fifty Five (55) work placement weeks, while the local supply chain spend over the entire life of the construction project is forecast to be £21m – 68% of the total value.

At Wates, we reimagine places for people to thrive – and this includes making sure that from start to finish our projects are bringing benefits to the communities we serve. We are very proud of our role in this leisure centre, which will become a vital hub for the community, and we’re also delighted with the way we have been able to work with local talent and the excellent local supply chain in Hartlepool so far. We look forward to working with more of the Borough’s diverse businesses as the projects continues.

Highlight, in its iconic setting on The Waterfront where it is surrounded on three sides by water, is a huge boost for Hartlepool, its residents and visitors.

Its impressive range of state-of-the-art facilities will provide a whole host of health and wellbeing opportunities when it opens next year, and in the meantime, I’m delighted to hear how local trainees and companies are also benefitting during the construction phase.

Hartlepool is a fantastic place to live, work and visit, and developments such as this show how we are really going places.”

Councillor Pam Hargreaves

Chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Economic Growth and Regeneration Committee

The project is being funded by Hartlepool Borough Council, Tees Valley Combined Authority and Sport England.
