Jacob is 18 and lives in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. He undertook a T-Level in Design, Surveying and Planning from August 2022 to June 2023
In that time, he carried out his 315 hours of Industry Placement on site with Wates. As his placement was coming to an end a job role was advertised for another site, the project manager on site recognised his potential and encouraged Jacob to apply for the role. He was successful in his application and became Commercial Administrator in August 2023.
His college experience involved a mix of three days in college and two days on site, which allowed him to apply his practical knowledge from the classroom. What he learnt on site provided valuable knowledge that helped when it came to exams at college.
Following his ambition to become a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor, Jacob will be applying for a Quantity Surveyor apprenticeship at Wates this autumn. In the meantime, he aims to absorb as much knowledge as possible to be well-prepared for this next step.
Offering advice to aspiring apprentices, Jacob emphasises the importance of discipline and commitment. Reflecting on his T-Levels experience, he recommends the program to anybody, highlighting how the combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on work provided a varied learning experience.
Jacob’s journey exemplifies the multitude of pathways within the construction industry and the commitment to continuous learning.
